Looking down on the plateau one can see distinctive topographical features such as sink-holes (Doline), Uvala, Karren, springs and limestone caves known as karst landforms. The karst landforms have been formed chiefly by the gradual dissolution of the limestone. Since ancient times the Akiyoshi-dai Plateau has been inhabited by humans. During the Jomon period, the general area served as a hunting ground and farmers used the bottom of sink-holes as vegetable fields. Nowadays the plateau is designated as a special natural monument and has become a popular place to study nature. |
